Intestinal protozoa affecting HIV patients


The important intestinal protozoa affecting HIV patients are:

  1. Cryptosporidium parvum
  2. Cyclospora
  3. Isospora
  4. Microsporidium.
  • First 3 are acid-fast
  • Oocysts of first 3 can be stained with modified ZN stain (0.5% Sulfuric acid)
  • Only microsporidium is non acid fast
  • Identification of first 3 are important from exam point of view.
